Northfield Seniors and others will find a wealth of programs and events offered at the North Shore Senior Center located at 161 Northfield Road in Northfield. Some events and classes are free and open to the public, others require fees. Reservations are need for most events. Sunday, March 16 - Romantic Impulse Concert Series - 3:00-4:00 p.m. The third and final concert is "Take Five" with works for two violins, two violas and violoncello. Performance take place at the Arthur C. Nielsen, Jr. Campus in Northfield, 161 Northfield Road. Individual ticket: $19 members/$25 non-members. Reception following performance. Wednesday, March 12--Gypsy at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater on Navy Pier--10:15 AM-4:00 PM. This jewel of the musical theater has been referred to as the greatest American musical ever and described as Broadway's own brassy answer to King Lear. The story is loosely based on the memoirs of strip tease, Gypsy Rose Lee, and follows the dreams of Mama Rose as she raises her two daughters. Enjoy one show-stopping song after another. Lunch at Riva's on Navy Pier. $99 member/$125 non-member. Fee includes lunch, theater ticket and transportation. Departs from Northfield location.
Friday, March 28--Milwaukee Art Museum: Art in Bloom--8:30 AM-3:30 PM. Enjoy the art, dramatic architecture and landscape design of the first Santiago Calatrava-designed building in the U.s., the Milwaukee Art Museum. Take a docent-led tour of the exquisite floral creations by top floral designers which are inspired by the museum's collection of master works throughout the museum. Art in Bloom is an unusual experience and a perfect way to welcome spring. you will see the wings of the museum raised and lowered creating a unique, moving sculpture. Thursday, April 10--Adler Planetarium--8:15 AM-4:15 PM. Visit the country's oldest planetarium and witness "Cosmic Wonder," the newest show in the Grainger Sky Theater. This is a visually stunning show that goes deep into the universe with an almost 3D effect. Journeys into distant galaxies take place in breathtaking detail, enveloping you in stars, space and in the feeling of being transported to another world. $79 member/$95 non-member. Wednesday, April 30--Tiffany Exhibit at the Richard H. Driehaus Museum--10:00 AM-3:30 PM. Steps away from Chicago's Magnificent Mile, the Driehaus Museum offers a fascinating view of one of the few remaining examples of the palatial homes erected in the 19th century Gilded Age by America's wealthy. A guided tour showcases more than 60 never-before-exhibited stained glass windows, lamps, vases, accessories and furnishings. The tour will include explanations of the design and manufacturing processes used by the Louis Comfort Tiffany Studios to create these breathtaking objects. You will have an opportunity to visit other rooms elegantly furnished with period pieces. Lunch will be at the Grand Lux Cafe. $79 member/$95 non-member. Friendly Visitor Volunteers Wanted. Brighten someone's day at a Friendly Visitor, a volunteer who provides companionship to one senior in his/her home. You can meet at mutually convenient times (ideally once weekly) and engage in activities such as looking at photos, working on a puzzle, listening to music and watching a ball game. Matches are made based upon geography and interests. Many seniors are in need of this relationship and you will feel the benefits of volunteering as well! Food Drive Contributions. Help make the holidays bountiful for others by donating to NSSC's Food Drive for the New Trier and Northfield Township food pantries. The donation bin is located outside the Lifelong Learning office in the Senior Center. If you are too busy to shop you can make a cash donation to the food drive at the A&A Cafe in the Senior Center. Note: Food items with expired code dates cannot be accepted. Your support is appreciated.
Congregate Lunch Program. The NSSC's Congregate Lunch Program is funded under Title III of the Older Americans Act of 1965, as amended. Its purpose is to provide hot, healthy middaymeals to people 60 years of age and older. Join us at the Senior Center, 161 Northfield Road in Northfield every Monday and Wednesday at noon for good food and a chance to meet other seniors who live in the surrounding communities. Suggested donation $3 or any amount you are able to give.
Volunteer at the House of Welcome. Get involved in The House of Welcome (HOW), the North Shore Senior Center'sspecialized adult day services for persons with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. Areas you can help in: Program Assistant - interact with staff and participants as you help with activities ranging from word games and discussion groups to art projects and baking. A weekly commitment is needed; Music Volunteer - play the piano or other musical instrument to entertain and engage the participants. Volunteer once or twice each month; Pet Therapy Volunteer - bring your certified therapy dog to HOW. Share your time twice monthly. Volunteer to Match Drivers with Senior that Need Rides to Medical and Dental Appointments. The North Shore Senior Center has a program called Escorted Transportation Service (ETS) which matches volunteer drivers with seniors who need rides to medical and dental appointments. The program relies heavily on volunteer coordinators who, from their homes, listen to the ride requests on a designated voicemail and call our volunteer drivers to see if they are able to help. Each coordinator takes a two-week shift on a rotating basis to listen to the requests and make the matches. The time commitment on average is 5-10 hours every two weeks. Home Repairs for Seniors. Seniors who need repairs they cannot afford may be eligible to have free repairs performed on National Rebuilding Day on April 30, 2011 by a crew of volunteers. Rebuilding North Suburban Chicago brings volunteers and communities together to improve the homes and lives of the elderly, disabled and veterans who are also low-income residents to enable them to continue to live in safe and healthy homes.
