Northfield Seniors and others will find a wealth of programs and events offered at the North Shore Senior Center located at 161 Northfield Road in Northfield. Some events and classes are free and open to the public, others require fees. Reservations are need for most events. The Art of Storytelling, Storytelling as Art--A Weekend of Culture December 6 to 8 at the North Shore Senior Center. Enjoy a cultural weekend at the North Shore Senior Center, 161 Northfield Road in Northfield, with three great artists. Friday, Dec. 6 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. come for a discussion and reading by novelist Scott Turow of his new book "Identical", with murder, sex and betrayal. Enjoy book signing and wine and cheese reception following discussion. Cost $50. On Saturday, Dec. 7 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. sculptor Binh Pho will discuss his work and book. Book signing and wine and cheese reception to follow. Cost: $50. On Sunday, Dec. 8 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. illustrator Terri Murphy will discuss her work and book which will be followed by a book signing with milk and cupcake reception. Cost: $50. Thursday, Dec. 5--Pabst Mansion and Victorian High Tea--10:15 AM-4:30 PM. Take an elegant journey through history in Milwaukee by visiting two mansions beautifully decorated for the holidays. Beer Baron Captain Pabst was a generous philanthropist and an avid art collector and his home reflects his taste. Completed in 1892, the mansion is a testament to America's Gilded Age, filled with priceless treasures of decorative and fine arts. Then, a complete Victorian High Tea including savories, scones, sweets and a variety of teas will be served at the Schuster Mansion, a magnificient house built in 1891. The current owners will also take us on a personal tour of the mansion describing its long and checkered history. $85 member/$99 non-member. Fee includes all tours, high tea and transportation. Wednesday, Dec. 18--Opera in Focus--11:00 AM-4:30 PM. Enjoy a festive holiday puppet show prsented by Opera in Focus which has been in operation in its beautiful Rolling Meadows theater since 1993. The puppet maestro will emerge from the pit, the curtains will part and a parade of puppets will perform the Act I Love Duet and the entire Act III of La Boheme. In addition, you will hear "White Christmas Interlude" featuring carols performed by legendary Soprano Leontyne Price. Lunch will be at Sam's of Arlington. $69 member/$85 non-member. Fee includes all lunch, ticket and transportation. Departs from Northfield location.
Friday, Dec. 20--Annie Get Your Gun at Light Opera Works--12:00 PM-5:00 PM. Catch this final dress rehearsal performance of the rip-roarin' saga of Annie Oakley's rise form rural ragamuffin to world-famous sharpshooter in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show...the man she can't get with a gun! Music and lyrics by Irving Berlin with favorites such as "There's No Business Like Show Business" and The Girl That I Marry." $39 member/$49 non-member. Fee includes general admission ticket and transportation. Departs from Morton Grove location.

Friendly Visitor Volunteers Wanted. Brighten someone's day at a Friendly Visitor, a volunteer who provides companionship to one senior in his/her home. You can meet at mutually convenient times (ideally once weekly) and engage in activities such as looking at photos, working on a puzzle, listening to music and watching a ball game. Matches are made based upon geography and interests. Many seniors are in need of this relationship and you will feel the benefits of volunteering as well! Food Drive Contributions. Help make the holidays bountiful for others by donating to NSSC's Food Drive for the New Trier and Northfield Township food pantries. The donation bin is located outside the Lifelong Learning office in the Senior Center. If you are too busy to shop you can make a cash donation to the food drive at the A&A Cafe in the Senior Center. Note: Food items with expired code dates cannot be accepted. Your support is appreciated.
Congregate Lunch Program. The NSSC's Congregate Lunch Program is funded under Title III of the Older Americans Act of 1965, as amended. Its purpose is to provide hot, healthy middaymeals to people 60 years of age and older. Join us at the Senior Center, 161 Northfield Road in Northfield every Monday and Wednesday at noon for good food and a chance to meet other seniors who live in the surrounding communities. Suggested donation $3 or any amount you are able to give.
Volunteer at the House of Welcome. Get involved in The House of Welcome (HOW), the North Shore Senior Center'sspecialized adult day services for persons with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. Areas you can help in: Program Assistant - interact with staff and participants as you help with activities ranging from word games and discussion groups to art projects and baking. A weekly commitment is needed; Music Volunteer - play the piano or other musical instrument to entertain and engage the participants. Volunteer once or twice each month; Pet Therapy Volunteer - bring your certified therapy dog to HOW. Share your time twice monthly. Volunteer to Match Drivers with Senior that Need Rides to Medical and Dental Appointments. The North Shore Senior Center has a program called Escorted Transportation Service (ETS) which matches volunteer drivers with seniors who need rides to medical and dental appointments. The program relies heavily on volunteer coordinators who, from their homes, listen to the ride requests on a designated voicemail and call our volunteer drivers to see if they are able to help. Each coordinator takes a two-week shift on a rotating basis to listen to the requests and make the matches. The time commitment on average is 5-10 hours every two weeks. Home Repairs for Seniors. Seniors who need repairs they cannot afford may be eligible to have free repairs performed on National Rebuilding Day on April 30, 2011 by a crew of volunteers. Rebuilding North Suburban Chicago brings volunteers and communities together to improve the homes and lives of the elderly, disabled and veterans who are also low-income residents to enable them to continue to live in safe and healthy homes.
