It is with mixed emotions that the Sunset Ridge District 29 Board of Education announces the retirement of Dr. Linda Vieth, Superintendent, effective June 30, 2013. The Board has begun the process of searhing for her successor and asks parents and residents to join them on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 in the Sunset Ridge School Learning Center, 525 Sunset Ridge Road, from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM to offer input into the attributes most desired of the next District 29 Superintendent. Families Invited to Enjoy Rides, Games and More at 65th Annual PTO Fun Fair Saturday, June 2 from 10 AM to 5 PM

This year's 65th Annual PTO Family Fun Fair will be held for one day only (rain or shine) Saturday, June 2 from 10 AM to 5 PM in the Community Center parking lot, 401 Wagner Road. Bring family and friends and enjoy rides/events including Giant Slide, Euro Bungy, Ultimate Laser Tag, Climbing Wall, Dunk Tank, Chair Swing, Moonwalk, Bingo and new this year - Wacky Shack and Kareoke. There will also be all kinds of carnival games and prizes plus Sno-Cones, Cotton Candy and Popcorn. Mega passes will be sold at both schools a week prior to the Fair for $30 each and $35 at the Fair. Individual tickets will be sold for $1.00 per ticket. The best deal is 30 tickets for $25. Don't miss the fun - find out who will be in the dunk tank this year!

Kohl Children's Museum Hosts Touch A Truck at Fields Dealership Sunday, May 6 from 10 AM to 2 PM

Kohl Children's Museum of Greater Chicago will host a family fundraising event, Touch A Truck, on Sunday, May 6, 2012 from 11 AM to 2 PM, at Fields Chrysler Jeep Dodge, 670 Frontage Road in Northfield. Between 20 to 25 trucks and vehicles will participate in the event. There will be food and live musical entertainment. Free parking in Northfield Plaza at the south end of the dealership available. This is a fun event for family and friends! Come and enjoy the afternoon!

Lutheran Church of the Ascension Programs and Events

Lutheran Church of the Ascension located at 460 Sunset Ridge Road (at Willow Road) will host a free concert by the United States Military Academy at West Point's a capella group, "The Knight Caps" on Saturday, May 5 at 7:00 p.m. The Knight Caps is comprised of an all-male a cappella specialty group of select members of the West Point Glee Club and performs a varied repertoire of doo-wop, ballads and pop songs from recent decades in addition to patriotic selections and traditional West Point songs. This concert is open to all Northfield residents, their family and friends.

On-going beginning yoga classes are being offered in the Augustana Room (enter at the northeast corner of the building) on Mondays from 9:00-10:00 AM. North Shore Senior Center Offers a Variety of Programs and Special Events

Northfield Seniors and others will find a wealth of programs and events offered at the North Shore Senior Center located at 161 Northfield Road in Northfield. Some events and classes are free and open to the public, others require fees. Reservations are need for most events. Thursday, May 24--Super Senior Day. Join us at the North Shore Senior Center - Arthur C. Nielsen, Jr. Campus to celebrate the 39th Annual Super Senior Day. Outstanding seniors will be honored for their volunteer efforts and honorees and their guests will enjoy a lovely luncheon followed by entertainment and awards ceremony. Civic organizations, churches, synagogues, senior groups and other non-profit agencies are invited to participate by selecting one volunteer, 60 years of age or older, who has made valuable contributions to the organization in their volunteer role. This is a once-in-a-lifetime award. If you know of someone you feel should receive an invitation, please contact Vivian Mitchel, Lifelong Learning staff member at 847-784-6092.

Sunday, May 6--12th Annual Samuel Thaviu Memorial Concert featuring Rachel Barton Pine at 1:00-3:00 p.m. Join us for an enchanting afternoon of violin performed by the World Renowned Grammy Winner, Rachel Barton Pine. Rased in Chicago, Rachel is considered a child prodigy and currently has a very active career performing classical, baroque, and rock. Reception to follow concert. Fee: $10 member & non-member.

Sunday, June 3--Reginald Robinson Performance: A Ragtime Tradition at 2:00-3:00 p.m. A very special performance by internationally recognized pianist, composer and recipient of the 2004 MacArthur Foundation Genius Award. Reginald will share information on the history of ragtime as he plays the classics by Scott Joplin, Tom Turpin, Joe Jordan and others as well as a selection of his own original award-winning compositions. Fee: $10 member & non-member.

Friday, June 8--Mark Damisch in Concert at 1:00-2:00 p.m. Enjoy a special afternoon performance by Mark Damisch who returns to NSSC to preview his 2012 World Tour. This year hear pieces by Copeland, Debussy and many more . Fee: $10 member & non-member.

Can she vanquish the program's reigning pricess, win over hearthrob Link Larkin and integrate a television show without denting her fabulous "do?" Thursday, May 31--Camelot at Light Opera Works, 12:30-5:30 p.m. Enjoy this final dress rehearsal performance and be thrilled again by the haunting love story of King Arthur and his queen Guenevere who falls in love with Lancelot. Thursday, June 28--Trip to Ten Chimneys Estate, 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Visit the Wisconsin estate of Broadway theater legends Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne. Almost all the enchantingly personal decor and collections are intact and unchanged since the Lunts first assembled them in the 1930s and 40s. Hear about the famous guests who visited them and tour the main buildings and grounds. Fee includes tour, lunch, and transportation: $109 member/$129 non-member. Trip departs from Arthur C. Nielsen, Jr. Campus, 161 Northfield Road in Northfield. There will be a significant amount of standing, stair climbing and walking on uneven terrain.

Share the Warmth. Do you crochet or knit? Would you like to learn? Lend your helping hands by making blankets for persons undergoing chemotherapy. Join our dedicated volunteers who crochet decorative borders for colorful fleece blankts. Here's how you can help:

--join the volunteers who make blankets at North Shore Senior Center; start a new volunteer group at a location of your choice, or make blankets on your own in the comfort of your home.

Friendly Visitor Volunteers Wanted. Brighten someone's day at a Friendly Visitor, a volunteer who provides companionship to one senior in his/her home. You can meet at mutually convenient times (ideally once weekly) and engage in activities such as looking at photos, working on a puzzle, listening to music and watching a ball game. Matches are made based upon geography and interests. Many seniors are in need of this relationship and you will feel the benefits of volunteering as well! Food Drive Contributions. Help make the holidays bountiful for others by donating to NSSC's Food Drive for the New Trier and Northfield Township food pantries. The donation bin is located outside the Lifelong Learning office in the Senior Center. If you are too busy to shop you can make a cash donation to the food drive at the A&A Cafe in the Senior Center. Note: Food items with expired code dates cannot be accepted. Your support is appreciated.

New Congregate Lunch Program. The NSSC's Congregate Lunch Program is funded under Title III of the Older Americans Act of 1965, as amended. Its purpose is to provide hot, healthy middaymeals to people 60 years of age and older. Join us at the Senior Center, 161 Northfield Road in Northfield every Monday and Wednesday at noon for good food and a chance to meet other seniors who live in the surrounding communities. Suggested donation $3 or any amount you are able to give.

Volunteer at the House of Welcome. Get involved in The House of Welcome (HOW), the North Shore Senior Center'sspecialized adult day services for persons with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. Areas you can help in: Program Assistant - interact with staff and participants as you help with activities ranging from word games and discussion groups to art projects and baking. A weekly commitment is needed; Music Volunteer - play the piano or other musical instrument to entertain and engage the participants. Volunteer once or twice each month; Pet Therapy Volunteer - bring your certified therapy dog to HOW. Share your time twice monthly. Volunteer to Match Drivers with Senior that Need Rides to Medical and Dental Appointments. The North Shore Senior Center has a program called Escorted Transportation Service (ETS) which matches volunteer drivers with seniors who need rides to medical and dental appointments. The program relies heavily on volunteer coordinators who, from their homes, listen to the ride requests on a designated voicemail and call our volunteer drivers to see if they are able to help. Each coordinator takes a two-week shift on a rotating basis to listen to the requests and make the matches. The time commitment on average is 5-10 hours every two weeks. Need to be reliable and have strong phone skills. Computer experience a plus. To learn more about becoming an ETS coordinator, contact Maura Rogan, 847-784-6052 or mrogan@nssc.org.

Home Repairs for Seniors. Seniors who need repairs they cannot afford may be eligible to have free repairs performed on National Rebuilding Day on April 30, 2011 by a crew of volunteers. Rebuilding North Suburban Chicago brings volunteers and communities together to improve the homes and lives of the elderly, disabled and veterans who are also low-income residents to enable them to continue to live in safe and healthy homes.
